ETERNAL VOYAGER- Let The Battle Begin

You all know how much I absolutely love hearing new bands- especially ones that can get my foot tapping, adrenaline pumping and head banging within a few short minutes. Well, I’ve got another one to add to that growing list now. This past month, I was introduced to a Midwestern power metal powerhouse in the making in Eternal Voyager while standing in line to get into Mill City Nights for the Blind Guardian/Grave Digger show. Had a chance to chat with lead vocalist Brian Blake and he handed me the debut CD. He told me that if I liked old-school true metal, I would like this disc. Needless to say, when I got back to Des Moines at 4 the next morning, I couldn’t wait to put the headphones on and slip it into the CD player just to see if he was right.

And holy fuck, was he EVER.

Right from the opening riffs of “Holy Warrior” through the 7-minute-plus “Eternal Voyager”, old-school metalheads will be pulled right in. This is what heavy metal is meant to sound like. It’s not over-produced, and that’s what helps give it that authentic, powerful yet not highly-slick-and-polished feel. Brian Blake’s vocals give an Iced Earth-type feel to the delivery- and I’m talking about the old stuff. The best stuff.

The twin guitar attack (something I have always been partial to) adds the musical crunch and a jackhammer rhythm section completes the masterpiece.

Favorite tracks? Try pretty much all of them. This CD is all killer, no filler. Their tracks tend to run between 5 and 8 minutes each (the exception being the narrated opening and closing) so this is not something you’re going to digest in little bites. From the first riff to the final one, you’re going to want to sit back and savor every note, every riff, every beat. These guys are without question representing the Midwest loudly and proudly, and if this debut is any indication, there is an extremely bright future.

Strap yourselves in…this Voyage is just getting started.

Final Rating: 8/10
